Australia: No. of fire death toll rises
Feb 8th
Victoria: Australian disaster crews are stepping up their hard work to undertake wildfires in the state of Victoria, as the death toll rises to 65.
About 30,000 firefighters are battling a number of main fires, and the number of dead is probable to go up.
Victoria Premier John Brumby said he had accepted an propose from the federal government to send in the army.
Whole towns have been ruined in the fires, fanned by high temperatures and random winds.
Forecasters are predicting further enormously hot weather in the region – which has seen record temperatures of 47C (117F) in recent days.
Officials say they are battling in opposition to the most horrible fire circumstances in the state’s history.
Witnesses described seeing walls of flames, trees blowing up and the skies raining ash, as fires tore across 30,000 hectares (115 sq miles) of forests, farmland and towns.
Kevin Rudd: ‘it’s an appalling tragedy for the nation’
At least 600 homes have been shattered in Victoria and about 14,000 homes are with no power.
Most of the people who died came from a bunch of small towns to the north of Melbourne.
At least 12 people died in the town of Kinglake, four at Wandong, four at St Andrews and three at Strathewen.
One Strathewen resident told ABC local radio how people had witnessed “absolutely horrific” scenes as they had helped battle the flames.
“The school’s gone, the hall’s gone… some people left it too late. We’ve lost friends, and we’re just waiting for more – children, loved ones,” she said.
The town of Marysville, with about 500 residents, was said to have been burned to the ground.
Local fire officer Greg Esnouf said: “We’re starting to get some reports in now that are very saddening. This latest report says Marysville possibly one building left standing – that’s just shocking.”
One person was declared dead in Marysville, but mainly residents managed to cover from the fire in a local park.
Tens of thousands of firefighters have been tiresome to hold blazes in two other states – New South Wales and South Australia – but the fires there were basically restricted or burning away from residential areas.
The fire service is using water-bombing aircraft to hold fires and thousands of volunteers are using water hoses.
“It’s obviously a tragic day and a tragic week in our history,” Mr Brumby said.
Late on Sunday, he said he had acknowledged an offer from Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to send in troops to ease overstretched crisis crews.
“Hell in all its fury has visited the good people of Victoria in the last 24 hours,” said Mr Rudd.
Bushfires are regular in Australia, but the existing blazes are the most deadly since 1983, when 75 people died on a day that became known as Ash Wednesday.
‘Luck By Chance’ and ‘Victory’ both fail to impress
Feb 5th
Everyone’s astonished and surprised because ‘Luck By Chance’ was believed to demonstrate one more jewel in the crown of Excel [Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani's production outfit], after ‘Rock On!!’, but the film failed to take off. Everyone’s shocked because ‘Victory’ failed to fetch a face-saving start. Its business would make Harman’s [or is it Hurman] colossal flop ‘Love Story 2050’ look like an epic.
Let’s talk of ‘Luck By Chance’ first! I’ve regularly said and I’d like to repeat the fact that box-office can be most random. ‘Rock On!!’ took a speedy start, but ‘Luck By Chance’, in spite of winning rave reviews, was limping in its debut weekend.
Unbelievable reviews [at par with Slumdog Millionaire], great word of mouth and a inspiring promotional campaign couldn’t do the trick. The attractive star cast, with more than a dozen cameos from top-of-the-line stars, didn’t help either. To put it frankly, there were barely any takers for this well-made film.
A section of the industry feels that the English title was a put-off. I don’t give to this theory for the reason that nearly every Hindi film today has an English name. Why, even ‘Rock On!!’ was an English title, but did it confirm to be a restriction? One more theory doing the rounds is, the topic [film industry] wouldn’t appeal to the common man, unless it’s supported by strong drama. Almost four decades ago, Hrishida’s ‘Guddi’ had the same setting and it worked big time. I guess, we start making excuses when a film fails.
The bitter fact is, ‘Luck By Chance’ has been known a miss by most moviegoers for reasons unknown to all of us. You can never read the moviegoer’s mind, really. For Big Pictures, its distributors, ‘Luck By Chance’ is a monetary retard, given the fact that the film was sold for a big price.
Now ‘Victory’! I rubbed my eyes in incredulity when you keep investigation of its box-office collections at many centre. Agreed, ‘Victory’ lacked in merits, but no one expected the film to collect 1/4th or 1/5th of what ‘Love Story 2050’ collected in its opening weekend. You can well visualize how poor and tragic the business of the film is. In fact, it would be an accomplishment if the film manages to total an whole week at several screens, since the collections are as good as zilch.
You’d be astonished to know that ultimate disasters like ‘Drona’ and ‘Love Story 2050’ had a better weekend than ‘Victory’. The collections, even at plexes, are as low as 2% and 3%. Only goes to show that what may be hot within the industry, may not essentially be hot with moviegoers.
The collapse of ‘Victory’ will hit Harman’s approaching films hard. You’re as good or bad as your last Friday and the last two Fridays in Harman’s life have been sad. Sad, but true!

For Slumdog Anil Kapoor & Rahman in court
Jan 22nd
A man, who claims to battle for the rights of slum dwellers, has taken the Indian artistes of the highly praised film Slumdog Millionaire to court, contending that their sensibilities have been insulted by the movie title that he found insulting of people who live in slums.
The case was registered by the Chief Judicial Magistrate on Tuesday in opposition to the movie’s music director A R Rahman, actor Anil Kapoor and other Indians related with the film that has won four Golden Globe awards, as well as the first Golden Globe for an Indian, for music director Rahman.
The first hearing of the appeal is scheduled Feb 5. Petitioner Tapeshwar Vishwakarma, general secretary of the Jhuggi Jhonpdi Sanyukta Sangharsh Samiti (a group promoting the rights of slum dwellers), has charged those related with the film of abusing slum dwellers in the name of entertainment just to make money and fame.
“Vishwakarma requested the court to protect the honour and respect of millions of slum dwellers across India,” his lawyer Shruti Singh said.
No charge, however, was filed against the film’s director Danny Boyle, who is a British citizen. “Vishwakarma made it clear that he hardly expected anything positive from a British filmmaker as their ancestors described us as dogs. But what hurt him was that even Indians associated with the film hardly bothered to object to calling us a slumdog,” Shruti Singh said.
The name “is against the basic human values”, she said. A copy of the petition has been sent to the National Human Rights Commission, Bihar State Human Rights Commission and the film Censor Board of the central government.
“I requested Censor Board chairperson Sharmila Tagore not to permit the release of the film in India under its present name,” Shruti Singh added. The film is slated for release in India Jan 23.

Abhay Deol: Dev D more about songs
Jan 11th
Devdas a novel by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyaya’s has been explored by a variety of filmmakers, but Bollywood actor Abhay Deol says his modern-day explanation of the book Dev D is special.
“It’s not a verbal film, it’s very heavy onmusic. If I compile my dialogues delivered in the film, not more than four pages will be covered,” Abhay said.
“Devdas has been made before, but this one has a very new, fresh and out of the box approach. Nobody had ever thought of making Devdas in this contemporary way,” he added.
Dev D, which is set to release Feb 6, is directed by Anurag Kashyap and boasts of 18 tracks as well as Rajasthani, Punjabi and Awadhi folk numbers compiled by music director Amit Trivedi.
The 32-year-old actor, who maintains that he do films that are significant, made his first appearance in 2005 with Socha Na Tha, a home production. He then went on to prove his acting skill with films like Ahista Ahista, Manorama Six Feet Under, Ek Chalis Ki Last Local, Honeymoon Traavels Pvt. Ltd and most lately, Oye Lucky Lucky Oye.
Talking on his present project, Abhay said: “When I read the book I realised that Devdas had streaks of arrogance and possessiveness. We kept those features and made the character very urban, a city guy.”
“It’s a deep character, but I did not have to work a lot on my body, look and attitude because the role did not require me to portray a character from a different background altogether,” added the actor.
The thought of the film, that is Abhay’s idea, is dissimilar. But will this story of the classic click with the spectators?
“Dev D adopts an unusual and contemporary approach and I think that is exactly what will work for the film, because it will be like a revelation for the people. It’s always good to turn a stereotype image and experiment with it.”
The film will be introducing two fresh actors as the new age Paro and Chandramukhi.
“Mahi and Kalki were very nice to work with. They were so professional that it didn’t seem they are making their debut with this film. Very sweet, very honest with their work and very hardworking,” Abhay said.
Differing from his current job, the experimental actor is all set to done the hat of a producer. He will be producing a film called Junction that will be directed by Atul Sabharwal.
Yet Abhay maintains that his acting career will not take a backseat for the reason that of his newfound role.
“I will continue acting in films for sure,” he said.
After Dev D, Abhay is all set to show his mettle with Dev Benegal’s yet-to-be-titled film.
Salman & Katrina’s adventure night
Jan 7th
Salman Khan seems to have a wild line for definite.
Freshly, the most famous shirt-dropper of Bollywood, amazed his ladylove Katrina by an strange outing in the middle of the nighttime.
The lovers (yes, still together in spite of the rumors) dined at the stylish Olive restaurant well in past midnight through the weekend and when they walked out after 1 am, Salman decided to attempt his hand at driving.
He selected up an auto-rickshaw from the road and the driver was further than glad to hand over his keys to the actor. Salman zoomed across the empty streets of Mumbai followed by Katrina and the auto-driver in his car.
Of course, this was not Salman’s first travel in the three-wheeler. Having done it a couple of times in the past as well, the celebrity has by now acquired a fine control over the vehicle. Katrina must have been smiling by her beau’s midnight venture, but it’s the rickshaw driver who must have been the most delighted after having sat shoulder-to-shoulder in a car with India‘s most googled personality and Asia‘s sexiest woman!
Wow, what a begin to the new year for the autorickshaw driver!
Well, what Katrina would have really ended of this all, only she would know, we aren’t even guessing!
