Tourism May Take a Hit with the Proposed service tax on room rates

The government’s Budget proposal to impose 5% service tax on rooms charging over 1,000 per night is likely to Foreign tourists arrival. In states like Kerala and Goa, the state governments levy a luxury tax on room charges which is as high as 12.5%.The new proposed service tax would amount to a multiplicity of tax as both the proposed service tax (levied by Centre) and luxury tax (levied by states) are on the same base amount.
Kerala and Goa, two of the favourite destinations for foreign tourists, the total tax on room rents would go up to 17.5% on levy of the newly proposed tax.
States like Delhi and Tamil Nadu also charge a luxury tax of 10% and 12.5%, respectively. Proposed service tax on room rates of over 1,000 per night to make stay costlier.
Indian Army Ski Expedition 2010-11

Congratulations to Indian Army on the successful Skiing expedition to the South Pole. The team comprised of:
Col Anand Swaroop, SM (Corps of Engineers)
Col Anand Swaroop was the leader. Qualified in Basic and Advanced Mountaneering courses from HMI (Darjeeling) and NIM (Uttarkashi), he has participated in numerous mountaneering expeditions namely Everest, Cho Oyu, Annpurna-1, Kalindi, Nanda Devi, Panchachuli, Mana etc.
Capt R Bala Karthik, SC ( Special Forces)
Capt R Bala Karthik was the deputy team leader. He is an alumnus of Sainik School, Amaravathinagar, NDA and IMA. He is a gallant paratrooper, who has earned a Shaurya Chakra for bravery.
L/NK Khilap Singh (Garhwal Rifles)
L/NK Khilap Singh hails from district Chamoli, Uttarakhand. He has excelled in mountaneering the courses at High Altitude Warfare School and participated in various mountaneering expeditions. He was also the official photographer of this expedition.
L/NK Arjun Kumar Thapa (Gorkha Regiment)
L/NK Arjun Kumar Thapa is a hard working Gorkhali, who kept the team pondering with his questions on history and geography. He has climbed Mt Lea Pargial and Kinner Kailash.
L/NK Parsuram Gurung (Para Field Artillery)
L/NK Parsuram Gurung is an astute gunner, who hails from Arunachal Pradesh, He has also summitted Stok Kangri in 2009.
RFN Tsewang Morup (Ladakh Scouts)
RFN Tsewang Morup hails from Ladakh, to whom mountaineering comes naturally. Humourous and dedicated, he remained the underutilised doctor of the team.
RFN Ram Singh (Garwal Rifles)
RFN Ram Singh is a tough Garwali, who has excelled in the High Altitude Warfare School courses. He was the communication expert during the expedition.
RFN Showkat Ahmed Mir (Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry)
RFN Showkat Ahmed Mir is a Kashmiri, who was a member of the Ski Team and has participated in the National Alpine Ski Championship in 2006 and 2009.
Amitabh Bachchan on Gujarat Tourism Advertisements

The new Gujarat Tourism Advertisements featuring Mr. Amitabh Bachchan has been launched targeting the CWG 2010 games. All the Ads hav really come out good and Amitabhji’s acting makes it a wonderful experience to watch.
This is definitely going to increase the tourism to Gujarat. The Ad with Lions does make every wildlife traveller attracted to itself. There is one shot in which Amitabh Bachchan acts like clicks a lion’s photo, unfortunately he has forgot to opens the camera’s shutter while giving that shot.
I wonder if anyone else noticed that? Gujarat is difinitely an unexplored destination and its high time when celebrities like Mr. Amitabh to contribute to its promotion.
Dilli Haat, Pitampura

Dilli Haat at Pitampura is a descent place to visit and defintely one good option for the people living in west Delhi. For long time west Delhi was missing somthing like this. At the this time of high prices, a descent place with only Rs 10 per adult entry fee for family man to spend the weekend comes as a blessing for Delhi.
Parking – Good parking with a low fee of Rs 15 for 3 hours. The parking guys are bit tricky, they charge you Rs 20 upfront and tell you to get Rs 5 if you are exiting within 3 hours. The guy at the exit will not return this balance until you ask for it, as he did with us. He made us wait in the side for few minutes when we insisted on getting the balance to check his reaction.
Ticket Counter – Tickets were easily accessible at a low fee of Rs 10 for adults and Rs 5 for kids.
Toilets - Toilets are neat and clean. There are even pay toilets, if someone looking for more luxury experience.
Stalls – Stalls from various craftsmen who have comein from different parts of the country are showcased over here. There are beautiful stalls for Indian crafts and food bazaar.
Update on British Airways cabin crew strike

Good news for British Airways travellers as BA officials have announced that they have beeen able to expand their flight schedule up to 30th March 2010 because of the increased numbers of their cabin crew now wishing to work as normal.
The website claims that BA would fly more than 75 percent of customers booked to travel during this period despite unjustified strike action.
BA has now published the shorthaul flying schedule for 31 March and 1 April and are expecting to operate a normal shorthaul schedule from 2 April.

Knife scare on Delhi – Colombo flight

A 12cm knife was found in the toilet of the Kingfisher flight flying from Delhi to Colombo. As per the latest information, the knife was found in the toilet during a stop-over at Chennai this afternoon.
Flight took off towards its destination Colombo after it was checked and cleared. Meanwhile, both Airline and Airport authorities are probing the incident.
Mumbai Airport : 6hour Maintenance on Tuesdays till March 2010

Mumbai airport begins a major upgrade today. One of the Mumbai airport runway to remain cloased for 6 hours today for maintenance.
The runway will stay closed for 6 hours on every Tuesday starting today for next 22 weeks. Maintenance will continue till 8th of March on 2010. Over 100 flights is set to be effected by this maintenance. This maintenance will increase the flights handling capacity of the airport.
Jet Airways and Jetlite has already announced rescheduling of its to and fro flights for Tuesdays from Mumbai Airport.
Air France plane crashes into Atlantic

Air France confirms the Airbus A330-200 with 228 people (214 passengers & 12 crew) on board has almost certainly crashed into the Atlantic. Plane hit heavy turbulence over the Atlantic. Plane could have been hit by lightning.
Several of plane’s mechanisms malfunctioned and the Plane sent out automatic signals for the electronic faults. The Air France Flight 447 lost contact within 4hrs from its take and it couldn’t contact Paris airport.
Planes from Brazil & France searching for the wreckage site. 2 each from Spain, France, England & Morocco on board. French President Sarkozy has said, there is no hope of any survivors and he couldn’t believe this mishap has happened.
